El Picacho
It is a 395 area of
blocks, 5 kilometers northerly it is located the center of the town and 1300msnm;
you found the park “Naciones Unidas”, better known as "El Picacho".
This monument on the top of the hill is called “El Picacho”, Tegucigalpa
is about 2.108 meters over the sea. This figure of stone have 20 meters high and
added to 12-meter to the pedestal has a 32 meters. Even though this creation
was recently built it (1997) has become an important icon of Honduran´s people.
This creation has similarities with Christ Corcovado in Brazil.
This monument can be seen from many places in the city. At Christmastime
have different colorful lights that cause an amazing impression. This
construction was the center of controversy between Protestant and Catholic
professions which ones dominate in Honduras, after Mitch Hurricane in 1998 a
foundation called "Cristo del Picacho" helped in the reconstruction
of houses for the affected victims of this phenomenon.
Every year religious
processions coming to his base; here it’s recognized as viewpoint where you can
see the whole city.
